Nice weather

Been getting up in the 40’s during the day and probably 50’s yesterday, with not much wind.

Worked on getting the hook up for the bale unroller on the back of the tractor working. Dean came along and helped me, we had a cup of tea and then ran to Punkin Center as I needed a new lick tub for the calves and we didn’t feel like cooking. We ran on to Glen and had a good visit. When we got home I went on to some other stuff and Brad showed up, so I had another good visit.

Ran into town day before yesterday and picked up the posters for the gig ad scattered some around. Met up with Paul and we both did the Live with JT show and got the word out about the show. Been getting some calls about it and wondering about tickets. They will be available at the door.

Supposed to be another nice day today and sounds like Tate and Kass and kids are coming out, so we can have an early birthday party for Lige. Tomorrow is the first day of deer season and I think Tate got a tag or two. Not a lot around, but we should be able o find one for him.

Fun

Went up the other afternoon and helped a friend and neighbor gather his cattle up close for shipping. Then we returned yesterday morning and sorted calves from cows and sorted off anything he wanted to keep and wean, loaded the calves and came home.

Fr Tyler came out a little before noon and after lunch he and I took Buck out, looking for grouse. Buck did pretty good, for a dog who has never hunted before. He found it strange that I didn’t want him to go work cows and just wanted him to run around up ahead of us, but not too far, and seemed puzzled, as he couldn’t see any livestock! We did finally kick a few out of a shelterbelt and missed on a shot by Fr Tyler. I was too slow and the shot was gone before I could take it. Oh well, we had a good visit and we didn’t have to clean any birds this way. Besides, I like to see these grouse running around here. Well, until one blows out of cover, under my colts belly! They sure can get things moving, then!

It was a nice day and the wind did pickup later in the day. Supposed to be in the 40’s today and then in the 50’s for the next few days. Guess I better get out there and get to messing with the Halflinger fillies!

By the way, I got a nice present in the mail yesterday. A knife sent to me by Connie over atย  Far Side.ย  http://farsideoffifty.blogspot.com/

Thanks Connie! Hopefully I will get a photo of it and post it on here!

Busy

Been working on stuff for the deal at Beslers Cadillac Ranch on November 19, this morning.

Thank you Sarah Carlson for doing the poster for us! Looks great to me. If anyone wants to have her do something of this nature, let me know and I will put you in touch with her.

Anyone wanting tickets for this, let me know as I have some made up now. These posters will be going up around the country as soon as I get them from the printer. If you’d like a poster or two to hang up in your area, let me know. These will be big, so postage on them might be expensive and if that is the case, I would ask people from a distance away to just copy and print this and hang them up, please. We have a very limited budget up front and if we don’t sell many tickets it will be worse than a break even deal. So I am trying to get by as inexpensively as I can.

Sorry Paul LarsEn, we spelled your name wrong. It’s always something!!!!!

Now, off to help a neighbor gather his cattle to ship calves! And it’s a beautiful day out there!

Today’s doin’s!

Real nice day. Cool this morning, but not bad. Little to no wind. Beautiful fall day, but they claim we got some rain and snow coming this afternoon/evening and the wind is supposed to be gusting to 44 mph by midnight, then slowly dying down until tomorrow evening. Cindy is staying in town tonight in case the roads get bad. Guess I am bachin’. Oh well, I got some pork chops and steak defrosting! Looks like I won’t starve! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Plugged in the tractor this morning (it was an “ether baby” and won’t start good unless it’s plugged in, even if the temps are warm) and moved some stuff around here. Took Buck with me and hauled garbage to the hole and then drove around down south looking at stuff. I seen one muley doe and a whitetail doe and that was about it for wildlife. I got the tractor started and then picked up some stuff and hauled it away and then this afternoon I dug a hole by hand as the post hole digger had a bent piece that when I tried to fix it, it REALLY got bent!

After lunch I caught and messed with the little Haflinger mares a bit and kept all of the Halfies in. Then I set a post after packing it from up here by the house on my shoulder ( made me think of Jesus, my how he suffered, as I am sure that cross must have weighed a lot more than this post and it was heavy. And I didn’t have to carry it nearly as far either!) I set it and then tied some poles up that were left over, so now there is a little more pole corral. I keep this up and I will use up all them old poles that have been “stored” around here for quite a few years.

I need to shower and then off to Mass.

Keep your hat pulled down!

Fall fun

I went with my neighbor to the west, up north to his brothers place to help them ship their calves. Got them gathered and sorted and then hauled the heifer calves up to the headquarters. The rest of the crew was gathering the big bunch and we didn’t help them. Then after unloading the horse trailers with the heifers we had a roll and coffee (pop for me) and then we went back and loaded the steer mates onto the truck and came home. Pretty cool and crisp up there this morning as you can tell by some of the clothes some were wearing. But no wind. Nice fall day.

Cool fall weather

About 35 degrees when I finally decided it had warmed up enough to go to work this morning. But the south wind is picking up. Horses were close so I opened the gate and shook a bucket and captured Mijo and Pilgrim. I saddled Mijo and then let him stand to warm his back while I took care of some business in the house. Then went out and rode thru’ the cattle, looking for sick calves. Luckily, I didn’t find any. Did find some grouse and deer. rode up on a sleeping white tail buck and thought maybe he was dead. Nope, I just had the wind on him. I hollered at himย  and he studied me for awhile and then decided he’d better leave. When he left another small buck went out also and then a tiny buck. None would make nice racks, tho’ the bigger of the two big ones had a tall narrow rack and should sure be culled this season. Probably someone will get all excited and think he’s a trophy and shoot him. Bet when they walk up they will be amazed and the horn shrinkage! That’s usually the case. Buck fever is a bad thing! ๐Ÿ˜‰

When I got home I stuck Mijo in the horse trailer as I am going over to the neighbors after bit to help them brand their fall calves. Wind is supposed to howl, so it ought to be interesting. Sure got a cold bite to it.

Buck went long with me and was very good. He is not scared of mad mama cows, but smart enough to get out of their way. I am liking him more and more.

Town run

Cindy and I hauled a critter up to Newell to the butcher, for Chances crew, yesterday. We then headed to Sturgis, dropped the trailer off and did some odds and ends shopping. Cindy needed some work clothes and shoes and I needed to get my one hearing aid adjusted.

We had to run back to Sturgis and help one sister move some of another sisters stuff. Long back story, but the place she was storing it at screwed her over.

Came back and stopped at CRS at Punkin Center and got a panel for my corral and the new gate opening. I could buy one for not much more than the cost of making one, turned out.

Weare supposed to have some winter weather coming in on Friday night, early Saturday morning. Ah well, this too shall pass.

I hope!

The great hunt

Had fun. Did not shoot one bird. I decided I needed heavier loads and better aim. But still had a lot of fun. Met quite a few new people and really enjoyed my traveling partner. I met him at Enning and we visited all the way down and back. We both tend towards ADHD so it was funny. There were enough birds shot and many didn’t want theirs so I brought my limit home. Got things ready for a storm supposed to be coming in on Saturday. Cindy rode Beaver and I rode Mijo and be brought the pairs back across the road and let them go north where there is quite a bit of fresh green grass grown up. Short, but lots of it. Should keep the calves gaining.

We took Bob and Buck with us and they both worked really well. I doctored one calf with droopy ears. We never used to get these sick calves. I guess we are all raising weenie calves!

We went to Punkin center and I got some shavings to put in their pens and then also filled the dog house and the pens with hay, to make it warmer and smell better. We stopped over to Bob and Suzies and got some horseradish they had ground up on Sunday. Wow! It is strong! Then we ran up to Brad and Becca’s and picked up my knife I lost and Becca found. Now off to Mass. It’s All Hallows Eve and there may be a few spooks and goblins running round the country. Hope they are satisfied with the candy Cindy bought!

Sure was a beautiful fall day! Taking a butcher critter to be processed for Chance and his boss, tomorrow.
