I am getting another cold! Man, I tell you, if you ain’t got little school kids around you bringing all these home, count your blessing! Well, yeah, it’s great to have them around, but Gus seems to bring every new cold home from school. All during Christmas vacation, nothing and bam… just as soon as school starts up again, here come the germs! I think it’s because of all these antiseptic hand products and such. Heck, we all need bacteria… just not always the bad kind. We will be wiped out as a human race not from wars, but thru’ germs! Mark my words!

🙂

Here is a photo of Gus after he had been watching Ironman 2 and of my latest leather project, a cover for one side of the little case I carry my books and CD’s in… Cindy had been pestering me to make it look more snazzy, I hope this is snazzy enough!

I ran Cindy in to town for a dental appointment this morning and I felt so poor we just grabbed a bite and came home after…

I will be in Iowa near New Hampton doing music and poetry with Bob Peterman and Rod Nelson on the evenings of the 25 and 26 of this month. I think the actual show is at Lawler and not sure if there are any tickets left. Marty Blocker will be there as host/MC, so we will have a great time. Hope the weather is good, that is a long drive on poor roads…anyway, if any of you are close and interested in the show, give me a holler and I can find out about tickets. It’s a fund raiser they do every year back there. I am taking my buddy Paul Larson’s place as he messed up his wrist and still is not able to play the guitar good enough to perform, but he will be back at it in no time!

I will be performing in California in the first part of February and seeing my buddy Mike, who has come visited me a couple times in the past. Gonn’a be a blast! Again, if anyone is interested in going where I am going, let me know and I will get you more info…

I had some today. Sam and Gramma went along to feed with the team as it was such a beautiful day. No breeze to speak of and around 30. supposed to get a couple of 40 degree days the next few. We’ll see, seeing as the wind is going to howl tomorrow, I guess you could say it’s a Chinook…probably make some ice. glad I got the team shod. Hope and Sam went to town later this morning and left the mean little blond girl with us. Her and Gramma watched a movie until nap time. Then I went and got Gus off the bus and he and i took the team and flatbed up the creek and got a tank for bean and a couple mineral barrels. Gus rode in the calf sled behind the wagon. The tongue got a bad spot crossing the creek so when we got home, we started the tractor and got it out of the way in the shed and pushed/pulled the wagon in and I welded on it. I may feed with the tractor tomorrow and see if the bale unroller on it will work. I need to get some new ears welded on that stick out farther as this tractor has bigger tires and the 3 point arms don’t set back as far and the unroller want’s to rub on the tires if you raise it too high…I found some chains for it and Hope has to go to town tomorrow so she can pick them up for me…here is a poor photo of the new tractor

This afternoon Hope and I took the kids over to the neighbors for sledding.

Kind’a frosty out there this morning… something below zero. But the team started right up! I lured the cows in with feed and sorted a few more off that show a little thinness so I can feed them better. They are still in great shape, but it’s easier to keep one in good shape than to get one in good shape when it gets cold.. Praise the Lord the wind ain’t been blowing.

Tate and Danny, Hope’s Dad, came out this morning to help the kids with the trailer house. Tate brought Gabe along so him and I went and pout out some bean for the cows. Little nippy but I seen lots worse this time of the year, so I will take it…

Some say that 90 days after a fog you will get moisture. Looks like we will get some the first part of March then!

Hope and I went to town yesterday to do some odds and ends. Coming back to Sturgis from Rapid, it looked like there was a huge fire. When we drove into the fog at the Black Hills Cemetery, it was like driving into a wall of solid white.

Snapped this pictures mid morning, this morning.

Got a new keyboard today so I am back at my usual pace… 😉

Read this out loud for best effect…

JW

You’d never guess from looking
the name they hung on him at his birth
I guess it wasn’t what you’d maybe expect
it was Johnathan William Hinklesworth

Now, that’s a purty long name
for just a tiny little feller
maybe he got it when Doc whacked his butt
cuz’ he let out a big man’s beller

Johnathan William was an elf
guess that sort’er maybe explains his size
but other than that and them pointy ears
he looked like one a the guys

He was like most little tykes
fightin’ with siblings and goin’ to school
runnin’ an’ wrasslin’ with his buddies and friends
actin’ rowdy and thinkin’ they’s cool

But the thing about ol’ JW
well… that’s what he called his self
was that he wanted adventure and action
more than your typical elf

He yearned to head down west
see… he lived way up north
he wanted to ride broncs and rope wild cattle
rodeo on the Fourth

There’d never been no elf cowboys
heck, they don’t run cattle way up there
horses was scarce as hen’s teeth
just snow and cold arctic air!

Like a kid raised in the city
he got by with books and TV shows
watching Roy and Gene and Lash LaRue
frustrated by cold and the snows

Made do with what he had
forged spurs from old rusty metal he found
built chaps out of a ratty ol’ walrus hide
Mama had left layin’ around

Asked Santa Claus for a Stetson
got it for Christmas, the very next year
order’d him a pony, but typical cowboy
his check just didn’t clear

You can’t keep horses at the Pole
there ain’t no hay or oats or grass
he got a Bruce Grant book on how to braid stuff
just to help the time pass

Braided a reindeer reata
70 foot long and it was a dandy
and after he practiced quite a spell
I tell you, he got plumb handy

But then he got into trouble
he was caught ropin’ ol’ Santa’s deer
snubbin’ ‘em up to an old sled runner
that had frozen up that year

Pleaded his case with St Nick
told him, cowboyin’ was all he wanted to do
so Santa thought it over for a spell
made JW stew

Then Santa made an announcement
said he was just callin’ a spade a spade
nothin’ to do but send him him down south
he could learn the cowboy trade

See, Santa knows lots a cowboys
they all owe Santa a great big debt
so he made a few calls and shipped the boy out
learn to cowboy, you bet!

That’s how it come to be
this little feller from way up at the North Pole
learned to rope and ride from the very best
too bad he learned to chew Skoal!

Now JW’s back up there again
ropin’ and trainin’ and swallerforkin’ ears
only difference ‘tween him and his southern friends?
he’s doin’ it with reindeers!

He’s finally found his niche
Buckaroo boss on the North Pole spread
mostly ropin’ and trainin’ them reindeer
to pull ol’ Santa’s sled

But now he’s got a new plan
called me last night, he’d been drinkin’ beer
put in an order for a custom made saddle
and it’s got’a fit a reindeer!

It’s got to be the right size
better be tuff, but light as air
bet he had a gleam in his beady little eyes
he’s gunn’a rope him a polor bear!
