More wind

But supposed to go down this evening and not blow quite so hard tomorrow.

I just did some odds and ends this morning and then Dean stopped in and had tea on his way to Punkin Center. I didn’t feel like cooking anything so rode along and Kelli was nice enough to buy us lunch!

After we got home I putted around some more then went out and fixed some fence in the lot coming in to the corralsย  and then got the horses in and caught Mijo for morning, so I guess I am ready to ship heifers in the morning. Pete and Lyle are supposed to be here about 7.

Cindy brought me home some throat spray and lozenges. They are helping, but I am sick and tired of this damn sore throat! Used to go thru’ this a lot as a kid before I had my tonsils out and hated it then and hate it now. I been trying everyone’s remedies and so far gargling with salt water is the only one working.

Movin’ heifers

Delbert and Glen came over this morning and we moved the heifers across the road and handier to ship them on Friday. We rode thru’ our pairs and picked up four that should not have been in there. I noticed one of my calves with an ear down, so this afternoon I saddled Beaver and rode down and finally caught the little booger. For a sick calf he could really run! Found one more heifer that we either missed or came back and so we took her home and put her with her mates.

This sore throat is whippin’ me. Doc said it didn’t look like strep and probably just the aftermath of nasal drainage. My nose has been stuffed up for about a month now and it seems to have come from all the extra weed and other forage growth. He gave me a prescription for a nasal spray and told me to gargle with warm salt water. He said toddy’s wouldn’t hurt anything so I am having one now. Tea, honey, lemon juice and a little bourbon. Works for me! Here’s some pictures. Click to enlarge.

Windy booger and cool this morning. Warmed up this afternoon but the wind blew harder.

Dang

Woke up about 5 this morning with a real, real dry throat. Must have been snoring and it felt like there was a flap of skin hanging down in there. Set up and read on the computer for awhile then went back to bed. Felt a little better when I woke up later.

Still tired from all the fun we had in Valentine! Might take a week to get back to normal, which for me is not real normal! Paul and I rode down together and when we turned south at Murdo, the wind really hit us. Really blowing hard. The next day Marty asked Paul if it was pretty windy on the trip down and Paul said, “Well, you’ve traveled with Robert before!”

Great friends, these! I’ve noticed that those who think I talk talk too much can dang sure hold up their end of the conversation and are just jealous that they can’t keep up with me! ๐Ÿ˜‰

ADHD is a weird thing!

Cindy and I drove her car down to Punkin Center (which by the way Mike said we should rename Blue Owl, then we’d have Red, White and Blue Owl and could really show how patriotic we all are) and she had her rear tires looked at. Both would got flat real slow. Each had a small nail in it. We were going to eat lunch there, but the cafe was closed as it is Native American Day in this state (Columbus Day in many others) and the Post Office was closed as was the Hair Place so I guess they thought they wouldn’t get much business. CRS was open tho’ so we got some more calf feed and some other things I needed.

This afternoon I went and worked on corrals and the loading chute ( added some dirt to the floor of it and alongside for the catwalk for the truckers) and hauled the odds and ends of old cut off poles and broke posts out. Where I put the new fence in, the old one was made of long thick glues together board called mega panels. 4 feet wide by up to 44 feet long. I have been cutting them up into assorted lengths and using them for other things., I hauled the left overs out by the old chicken house I use for a kennel and and trying to build dog pens in there, so each dog has his own and can be locked up. I had Buck and Bob in their yesterday evening and Bob whipped up on Buck pretty hard. Male dogs! Maybe females are the same way, I don’t know.

I got the gates built on my stack yard this morning also. Got some help coming Wednesday so we can move the heifers onto the north side of the road for shipping on Friday. Be nice if the heifers don’t go into the stacks.

Maybe tomorrow I can get Gramma to help me biuld pens for the dogs! ๐Ÿ™‚

Warm today and a little windy. Nice fall weather.

Overheard at Valentine

this weekend.

“I ain’t saying she was fat, but we was gonn’a have to quarter her to pack her out!”

“He won the door prize last year, a pink toilet brush., when I saw him yesterday I asked how that worked out for him and he said, “Oh I tried it for about a week then I just had to go back to using paper.”

By a host at one session, when introducing one of the performers, “I can only really tell you two things about this guy. One, he is not in the Nebraska Penal system. Two: I really don’t know why he is not!”

“I watched a documentary on drugs the other night and I’ve got to say this, if your gonn’a watch a documentary, that’s the way to do it!”

Dark thirty

When we took off.

I met Lyle at his corner and he and his horse jumped in with me and Buck. We got over to the Association and went with the feller who runs it and his wife and nephew and rode west into a small holding pasture and gathered. Cows weren’t real cooperative, but we finally managed to get them thru’ the gate and into the trap at the corrals and penned. We sorted the calves off the cows and waited for the owners and the truck and trailers. Got them loaded and then headed home. Got back about noon and Fr Tyler was here and he and his mother had made some home made spaghetti sauce from fresh tomatoes. It was great. Now, they are off fishing and I am hiding from the wind, but better go out after I post this and work on something outside. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here’s a few pictures from this morning. Click to embiginate and see them better.

More hay

Got another 6 loads in today. Bales weighing about 1100#. Got about 200 tn on hand now so I feel better about winter coming.

Cindy helped me swap the bucket on the loader from the wide bucket to the narrow bucket, so it was handier to handle the bales. When we got all done unloading the truck with the last load, she helped me switch back to the wider bucket and then I went and drove/pushed a pipe in the ground out by the corrals for a new corner post. I also moved some old cottonwood logs around out of the way and hauled them to the wood pile/windbreak.

Got my horses in and caught Mijo for tomorrow. Need to be about 35 miles east of here by 7 am to help a neighbor gather his cattle to ship his calves.

Worked Buck on the calves tonight and he is eager but a bit hesitant. He will come out of that with experience and probably another dog along to brave him up. He sure is a happy dog!

I cut some panels out of the old fence that was made of 4 foot wide wood by 44 feet long and hopefully tomorrow when I get back from helping the neighbor I can start making some dog pens in the old chicken house I use for a kennel. Might even get Gramma to help me a bit! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Got up in the 80’s again today. Supposed to stay like this until Thursday and then cooler, wetter weather on the way.
