Been in the upper 90’s since the Artist Ride started. Of course, when your on the river and having fun it isn’t so bad but when you come back to the real world and work, you notice those kinds of things.. or at least I do. Probably wouldn’t seem so bad but lots of humidity with all the rains and green grass we have, but I ain’t complaining about that! I’ll take it, this too shall pass…

I got all the boards tore off the old alley fence I replaced with logs and the planks and put them here and there, kind of stored the best stuff, pulled all the posts and I now have a wider sorting alley… we’ll see if that is an improvement. Now I need to replace a gate and it ought to be good for a few years, barring any major wrecks.

Came in to cool off a bit…should go work on some leather projects I guess, seeing it is hot out..

Busy weekend coming up. Cowboy Culture has gigs at Chute Rooster on Friday night, at 7 o’clock, Lead Opera House on Saturday night at 7 o’clock and from 1 until 4 o’clock at the base of Devil’s Tower on Sunday… Hopefully we will have some nice crowds… after that we are at Pierre for their Heritage Festival on the weekend of the 15th and then Paul and I will be at Hot Springs the 27th and 28th.

We are working calves here on Saturday the 7th, so I sure have plenty to do…

Well, we had a blast, as usual. Chance and family and I went down Wednesday afternoon and Dusty and Tris went along and camped with us also. Cindy got Gabe on Thursday evening and came down. Hot, by and large, but it usually is. There had been a l;ittle change in managing it so everyone was wondering, but it turned out great. More mellow it seemed. fewer artists than the year before, but still more than many years. Fewer models, but still more than enough. We had some new artists and some old, new models and old and everyone worked together and i think the artists were pleased. We took 4 horses and two ponies and a pony colt and they worked out well. Had one scene where Gus and Sam all dressed in woolies, scotch hobbled the pony, blindfolded it and one hung on the head while the other mounted and took the blinds off. No bucking, but that was okay. We did the same with a horse.. again, no bucking and of course not Sam or Gus, but Chance and Dusty.

A great time and we are already thinking about some new stuff for next year.

I never took any photo’s but here is one Hope took for me. I put my bedroll on Beaver like the old timers did it when traveling across country repping, with no pack saddle, just the bed roll tied on with a rope. This is how a cowboy would carry his worldly possessions and “40 years gatherings” when he went from one job to another. When repping they would also have their string of horses, tied together or just drive them along in a bunch.

Went out this afternoon and got the run away ponies in ( they have been crawling under the wire and grazing in the yard, so I have been shooting them in the butt with a BB gun. So then they went across the road to lush green feed) I got a new set of stirrup leathers made for the pony saddle so we had to try it out. Gus rode, then Sam and then Gramma brought Addy Bear… Addy was riding and the little mare was real calm, but when I swished a flag that she had been ignoring before, she jumped and Addy Bear hit the dirt! Poor little kid. Landed hard and scared her more than hurt her, but I made her get back on and set there until she calmed down so she would see it doesn’t always happen like that…but I am afraid she is soured on ponies for a bit…

Been trying to get stuff ready for the artist Ride, Finished up a pair of chaps for a guy down there, finished up a pair of woolies for the grandkids and made a new pair for me and Chance… Fixed up an older saddle too…Cindy and I ran down to Rapid yesterday afternoon and bought a new phone as the answering machine on our old one quit working…Then we went to my 86 year old Aunt’s wedding, didn’t look to be a shotgun affair… 😉 I asked if they the church made them take family planning courses and she said seeing as between them they had 11 children, they let them pass… LOL

We had a real strong brief wind go thru’ this morning, kind of a mini tornado, it knocked the electricity out here so I went up to Chance and Hopes and called them and stayed for lunch, excellent! Indian Taco’s. Brad was down visiting so when Chance and Sam and I rode out to check yearlings he rode along.. he even got to rope one with Chance.. I doctored him… I think they planned it that way.The guys from the electric company came down and got the thing fixed that made the electricity go off, so we are back in business!

I woke up early for a change.. seemed like I dreamt all night…Been getting stuff ready for the Artist Ride which happens next week. Cowboy Culture is entertaining this evening at CRS trade show and steak feed…it will be fun to get to work with Paul and Ken after some time away…they are both pumped up and ready to roll…we have three gigs in a row at the end of the month and first part of net month, then a couple more in September…been foggy and cool in the mornings, more like fall than summer, but from the looks of that, it’s about to change to more normal… if you go by the fog, we should have wet weather in November…of course, it’s always pretty warm during the Artist Ride…I suppose I better go see about fixing and building more stuff!

Been coming down hard as i set here… a regular frog drowner, toad strangler…

Yesterday Cindy and I took a horse up to Dustin to ride awhile… not sure why, I can’t seem to get any miles on the last two i got home from him… we came back by Newell and ate an early supper at the Blue Line in Newell… the new road guy over in that neck of the woods is doing a good job looks like, now if Butte county would get some gravel and a blade out on their portion…I ran down to CRS and got some feed for cat’s, dogs, horses, and a calf this afternoon after dinner, then Cindy went with me and we hauled salt out to the yearlings… Hope took the kids to town today, poor ol’ Sam had to have a bunch of dental work done and the way one of my tooth is feeling, I better try and get in to a dentist in the next few days…I love rain, even with a leak i can’t seem to stop, in my roof… 🙂

and overcast this morning…Tate, Kass and kids just left…. they took Cindy’s Mom home on their way. She had ridden out with Cindy on Thursday evening after Cindy got off from work…we all went to Ft Pierre for the Memorial service of Ruby, Cindy’s Gramma…. most of her cousins and all of her aunts and uncles were there…so she enjoyed visiting with them all… we left after some lunch and visiting and stopped and got a dart gun and more expensive miracle drugs. When we got home Chance and I took the new dart gun out for a test drive, doctoring a bull with foot rot…also a calf with a bad eye…it’s not as handy as roping and doctoring, but you don’t have to run them around if they have some respiratory sickness, so that should make it better for them… kind of expensive, the darts cost about 5 bucks a piece and the ,medicine costs about 500 bucks for 100 cc bottle… so you sure don’t want to miss and waste it!

I borrowed the neighbors dart gun as a few of these yearlings seem to be having some respiratory trouble and I didn’t want to run them, so I just drove up and shot them with high priced miracle drugs, fairly close… rode out around the pairs this afternoon and I got a bull who is getting a sore foot, but I am out of the magical drug that you shoot in the gun, so will get more tomorrow and do him then…it works but it expensive but then magical miracle stuff always is, isn’t it?
We are going to Ft Pierre for a memorial service for Cindy’s Gramma, tomorrow… she passed away last winter but they are finally getting around to burying her.. or her ashes, at least…

Several of us went up and watched the bronc riding in Faith last night. Rusty Wright won it. 17 year old son of the world champion of this past year…good broncs and good riders for the most part…

Been getting some rain showers pretty much every day here for the past week, some places getting goods rains some just showers… sure is green! These pictures don’t show it truly…

But somebody has to do it…

I went out and fixed some fence today… some of the water traps were getting a little rough around the edges… while down south I noticed a yearling limping as they trailed off., so this late afternoon, Chance, Gus and I went out and ended up roping and doctoring 6 head… found a dead one who we doctored the other day and i really wasn’t surprised… he didn’t look very good at the time but we gave it the old college try…the last one we doctored had a bad eye and a sorry attitude…he was big 900 plus and Chance just houlihaned him with out running him and taking some of the steam off and to top it off he was in a water trap so not much room to maneuver…I knocked my glasses off in my hurry to get him heeled and pulled down as he was on the fight and looking for any horse or body to take his rage out on…Chance managed to pick up my glasses and it only bent them up a little but i would have sworn my horse stepped on them…I got a single and we stretched him out and Chance kept the pressure on while i jumped off and tied his hind feet together and he kept the pressure on while I doctored him…I managed yo get him on his side and get Chances rope off the neck and on to his front feet so he could hold him while I got the other ropes off and still be able to turn him loose… when he came up he was on the fight and looking for trouble but we managed to get away unscathed…I think he’s got some Chiania in him… dirty snotty booger! Our horses were wet with sweat as it was pretty muggy and no breeze.. there are two or three other one who will need attention in another day or two… it does no good to doctor them too quick or it just makes the sickness last longer. on feet and eyes, seems like… most say that on treating pinkeye if you doctor them it takes about 14 days for them to heal and if you don’t it takes two weeks…. 😉 and I think there is a lot of truth in that…

Chance and I rode out this morning and doctored some sickies…this afternoon I worked on setting corral poles… I got all the sections done but my posts are too short to put the last rail on on every other one…I either need to leave them as they are or do some cutting and notching… I had to do some of that as it was and evidently should have done more… oh well, it will hold cattle this way, unless they are jumpers…I took some pictures but they didn’t turn out.. it’s cool looking anyway…
