Tuckered

I have some corriente cows I am running with mine, that belong to a neighbor. We have some small calves that a young neighbor  wants to lease for roping practice at his college, so I got them sorted off yesterday so we could determine ownership, seeing as we have never branded them and today we got them branded. My 3 little ones and all of the neighbors. Just a small bunch and it is so wet and icy that we just did them in the back of my shed. Another couple neighbors came and helped and we got them done, but I seem to be tired this evening. Missed my nap. Man, I am going to get soooo cranky!

One more nice day up in the 40’s and then it’s going to cool off for a while, I guess. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

Congrat’s Mr Obama

As we have done ever since this country declared independence, we swear in a new president today. No coup, no bloodshed (I hope!) just one person stepping down and another stepping up, at the will of the people. (I hope!)

He was not my choice and I fear what might happen to this country, because of the mood and why people voted for him. Og, from Neanderpundint,  summed it up nicely in his blog, which I quote here.

“Most of all, I hope America wakes up to what they’ve done, and don’t do it again. We need a president who becomes president because of the content of his character, and not the color of his skin- which is what we have now.”

Amen Og, I feel the same.

Go read the whole thing, it won’t take long. Just click on that name on my blog roll,it should take you there. While your there, check out a few of his and dick’s other postings.

Caution: some of the posts over there are not for the squeamish, who don’t like to read reality.

Ice!

Warmer weather and winds have turned this ranch into a skating rink! Man, it is slippery out there. When I drove the team and wagon up to feed today, I walked alongside so as to get some exercise and it was the pits. Slipped and slid and finally gave up and rode on the wagon. At least the team have non slip shoes on so it doesn’t bother them much as long as there isn’t snow balled up on their feet. Now I know why they used to use long caulks on the winter shoes.

Supposed to stay in the 40’s and 50’s most of this week. Maybe it will soak a little of this ice into the ground. I see we have water standing in the road ditches. Probably have water running in the next day or two.

And from another blog…

This guy is sooo right! Go here to read more.

Let’s Declare This February 2 “Al Gore Day”

Yes, it is time to initiate a viral meme on the Internet to honor our illustrious fearmonger protector of Mother Gaia. Let February 2, 2009, be declared Groundhog Al Gore day.

If, in the dead of this record setting cold winter, Al Gore comes out from whatever hole he’s been hiding, it means he thinks the winter is going to be short. Let us hope he is finally right as too many people are hurting from this cold already.

And here’s some great global warming cartoons.

Another one….

Birthday’s that is. I’ve had 50 before this one.

Odd, I don’t feel like I am that old. You body ages but your mind thinks your still in your 20’s.

As far as birthdays go, this has been a good one. Had calls from Rome, two from Arizona and got emails and calls from lots of friends in between.

Took the old cow down to the taxidermist. They will butcher her and prepare the head and cape for mounting and about a year from now we should have the head mount. The guy is real busy. And I am in no hurry. Not for the mount anyway. But I am anxious to get the hamburger for the old girl. She raised me 17 calves in the past 17 years, but came up open this fall.

Fed with the team today. Supposed to get cold tomorrow night and the next day. Then warm up into the 40’s. Woo hoo! Bring it on!

Whooooo!

Woke up about quarter to 5 with a steadily cooling house. Rained a little last night and the wind was howling. Must have knocked a breaker out. Called our rep at the Electric company and by a little after 7 they had it going again.

We might still go try and ship some cattle. Waiting until about noon to hear more.

Supposed to get up to 24 degrees today and then start falling with gusts up to 60+ mph. Wish I had followed my instincts yesterday and fed more hay. Oh well, if they come in I will feed them and if not they will be fine for awhile. At least they got their bellies full yesterday.

Another wonderful day in paradise

Got up in the mid to upper 30’s today and little to no breeze. Went up and fed a bale with the team. They had to get down and pull,in a few spots where the snow has been drifting in. Nothin’ too high or long, but enough where the wagon wheels don’t match and follow where I made a track with the tractor wheels.

This evening Chance and I went up and tried to call a coyote up, but evidently they are too smart for us. I don’t think that takes too much!

Supposed to go help a feller ship some calves tomorrow, but the forecast is fornsnow tonight and wind tomorrow, so don’t look like it will happen. We’ll see.

Weather

Yesterday there was hardly a breeze and today the wind is howling. At least it got warm enough yesterday to crust up the snow a little so it isn’t drifting and blowing around. Cindy said there was rain in town last night and she is worried about the roads coming home this afternoon. She stayed in Wednesday night and may have to tonight.

If you go click on the Future Priests blog on the side here, you can start seeing some pictures and stories from Tyler, while in Rome. His class is spending the month there as part of the classes they take. Some interesting stuff.

NOON UPDATE: Yup, the snow is blowing and swirling! Cows seemed content when I went to give them some more bean. They are in protection chewing their cuds.
