Hard freeze

Got pretty nippy last night. Pretty thick frost on the windshield this morning.

Went to a branding yesterday. Chance went along. Cool and windy, but we worked the cows and then branded the calves in a fair sized shed. Worked fine, just a little crowded to drag calves to the fire.

Then in the late afternoon, Jim and Sue, who are visiting the neighbor, came down and went with Chance and I and we got the older pairs in and gave the calves a shot of over eating. Weaned off the fall calves also.

Now, if we don’t get the calves branded for awhile it isn’t too big of a deal. Shouldn’t lose any to over eating anyway. Over eating usually gets the biggest and oldest calves who’s mothers are milking really good. They get so much rich milk it causes toxicity in their gut and kills them. Some give the shot when the calf is first born, tho some vets claim the calf is too small to have it do any good. But I know several neighbors who used to lose calves from over eating until they started giving that shot at birth. Guess the calves didn’t know it wasn’t doing them any good! When we give the branding time shots there is over eating in that shot. Also for blackleg.

Sunny and calm out there this morning. Looks like another beautiful day in wonderland! Sure is nice to feel good again.

  1. I fear most of us around here are more adept at ridin’ combines and tractors than ropin’ from horses, so we pen the cattle and run ’em through a squeeze chute.

Plus, most use ear tags these days. I’ll bet it’s been over thirty years since I wielded a hot iron.

  2. Never heard of this over eating stuff……..well maybe me šŸ˜‰ We just give ’em a shot at branding for blackleg.
