It’s started……

Got a calf on Saturday, two yesterday and looks like a new one out there today. all out of the older black cows Chance bought. When I’ve went to notch the calves ears, the mama’s have all been very good mama’s! Seems they don’t approve. Got all huffy and every thing! Oh well, I have dealt with crabby females all my life! LOL

Bob is learning that mama cows can be protective. Hard to remember to keep him locked up when I go to feed. He tried to run up and nip Roz in the nose yesterday as I was driving along, taking a bale out to the cows. I got my little stock whip down and warned him  off with it. Hopefully he will quit. He seems smart about so many things for his age, I sure don’t want him thinking it is alright to bite at horses. One good kick and it will be poochy pie, as Gary McMahan sings in his song.

Here’s a link to a story or two by the man who was here from the paper on Saturday.  http://www.rapidcityjournal.com/app/blogs/outdoors/

  1. Hope all your calving goes well. I checked out the link, sure looks like there was a lot of hot air flying along with the clay pigeons. Nice seeing photos of you driving the team, and some fine shots of your saddle shop.

  2. Break the horse nip thing now!
Pop whips are good for such things.
If you are lucky Bob’ll get rolled, running off yiping and crying and hang under your feet when horses are around….

Someday I am going to get and post a video of Bob’s mama holding a herd of cows OFF the feedrow until my husband is done feeding and shut the gate on the stackyard. Then and only then does Gabby allow them to move forward. Strangest thing we’ve seen a dog do but man does it make feeding a breeze!

    1. Lori, this seems to be one of the most understanding dogs I’ve ever been around. It’s like he understands English, kind of. I’m liking him.

Moves like a lobo wolf, so I imagine when he gets his growth he will rule the roost where ever he chooses.
