Whew!

That wonderful 50 mph breeze that has been softly wafting the last few days, along with the scattered drops of rain, inspired me. Here’s my latest after some great comments from Beth who is such a wonderful poet and always ready to point out where and how I can improve something. Thanks Beth!

When you read this, please do it aloud and let me know what you think. This type of poetry is meant to be heard not read.

Wind wisdom

He stood there unprotected by the buffets of the breeze
As inert as a statue formed by the hand of God
that tempest was roaring so hard from our rear
I was fearful it would remove the prairie grass sod

Our hats were screwed down like they’d been stitched on
the wind was teasing and tormenting every creature to drop
torturing and tickling as we were rapped and slapped
like a master of the whip making the leaves of the grass pop

Wind propelled water droplets ‘pert near pierced
the skin of cheekbones, exposed and unprotected
tho’ ears were bent forward like pages of a book
wisdom he passed on to me was completely unsuspected

I casually mentioned this nasty, wicked wind
but didn’t whine, because of cowboy pride
He drawled, “It sure could be worse, I reckon
We could both have jobs that kept us cooped inside!”

    1. One disappointment of my recent trip was that the late start – to replace the truck clutch – made it impossible to try to arrange a visit to the Dennis Ranch. Next time, I hope.

That 50-mph wind blew me all the way home from Fort Hall. It also scared the evil out of me a time or two in the Medicine Bow range. Lot’s of high snow for early October from there back to the Utah border.

One exception to the fair-wind comment. I decided to take 87 from North Platte through the Sand Hills, which put the wind on my port quarter and had me spending a lot of time in third (out of five) gear.
