I knew it!

I just found this on Allan Nations blog.

A comparison of grassfed versus grainfed beef by Clemson University has found ten health advantages for consumers in the grassfed product. These are:

1. Lower in total fat

2. Higher in beta-carotene

3. Higher in vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol)

4. Higher in B-vitamins and riboflavin

5. Higher in minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium

6. Higher in total omega 3’s

7. A healthier ration of omega 3 to omega 6 fats (1.65 vs 4.85)

8. Higher in CLA (a potential cancer fighter)

9. Higher in vaccenic acid ( which can be transformed into CLA)

10. Lower in saturated fats linked with heart disease.

This study was published in the June issue of the Journal of Animal Science.

  1. Unfortunately I don’t have that option!! I have only 27 acres and 10 is wooded and 5 is the house and the balance is used for horse and cattle hay. I have to use grain to fatten my cattle. I would love to have the grass for my feed!!

  2. Lisa, do you raise all the grain your beef eat? Can you buy or raise hay for them. this can be done with just forages also. We need to get you a copy of Grass Farmers Journal. Allan Nation is the editor/owner. Here’s a link to his site so you can look around. they will send you one free issue to check out if you ask.

Nice blog you have! Such pretty country you live in.

    1. Thank you and I will go to the web site to get that free issue!! We don’t raise our own grain but we don’t feed alot of it either, we do more hay than grain. Just enough to get them fat when it is time to take them to market.

Thank you and it is pretty, the mountains are gorgeous but I have to say I really hate New York State, I am orginally from Illinois and I love farm country alot better and the people are alot nicer!! The eastern folks (not all) aren’t as nice!! My husband and I are looking to move out west some where, wyoming, we shall see, that is not tomorrow or even next week!

  3. Well Lisa, there is farm ground to the east of us. The irrigate it there. And the eastern part of the state has mostly farm ground also, as they get a lot more rain than we do. You might want to look into it, if you are serious. I hear farmland prices dropped in the last year. My buddy from Iowa just bought a ranch east of here along the Missouri river, this winter/spring. He loves it!

My Grandmother came from Illinois and homesteaded out here and my Grandfather came from Iowa as did his father. I am on the ranch they homesteaded at the turn of the century.
