A new blizzard

Is here! Snow coming in horizontilly as I type. Wind out of the north east and slowly coming around to the north. Chance and I sorted off 4 cows last evening that looked like they might calve and locked them in the shed. None had calved yet this morning. When I got up in the night we just had the wind and no snow, but it seems to be making up for lost time.

Oh well, I bet we have a good grass year this year. And at least all the dams and waterholes around here are full. Praise the Lord!

  1. Yeah, those spring snows do bring lots of good moisture. Keep your eyes on the prize, ha! It started blowing and snowing here yesterday morning right after I came in from feeding my plugs. I had put their blankets back on the night before, so they were comfortable. I took them to the arena and just three other guys and one to run the chute showed up. I actually had a pretty good day roping for a change. The new steers are coming along nicely. They are out of Longhorn mommas and Corriente pappas. Seems to be a good combo for roping stock.

With this nasty spring weather, you’ll probably be really motivated to stay inside and work on my saddle, right?

  2. Thanks collie, but don’t worry about us, we will be fine. It’s just how things go in this country., If we didn’t think we were going to have to put up with blizzards, we shouldn’t probably liver here. Better blizzards than crowds of people!

Yeah Jill, I am working on your saddle, but no hurry, you won’t even think about coming after it until the end of May I bet! Tell Rich good luck!

  3. Crappy weather here too but we only put three heavies in the barn pens last night. Two babies this morning and both mothered a calf and sucked it. If the calves were switched at birth it’s not a problem now.

We worried about the herd in the wind last night but there is plenty of natural shelter for them. And, we’ve culled off the more stupid mothers. Not all are terrific mothers but most should be smart enough to get a calf up and sucked as quickly as possible.
