Back to winter

I went out before daylight and plugged the tractor in and was sure wonderin’ about that new calf, as the wind was blowin’ and it wasn’t that warm. In my gut I knew his momma had him in a good spot, but just the same, he wasn’t very old at dark last night. When it got light enough to see, I walked over and looked a little, but didn’t see him. Seeing as she didn’t act too friendly when I checked on him yesterday, I didn’t want to go strolling around them. I just put my faith in the Lord and waited awhile, then went back out and fired up the tractor and as I drove to feed them, noticed he was up and sucking, just as I thought he would. Makes me wonder why I don’t trust the Lord better than I do. Weak I guess.

Anyway, it made me think, that and also the cold wind whistlin’ by me, inspired me  to write this poem.

March Blizzard 09

There’s an arctic knife cuttin’
‘cross the snowdrifts scattered ‘round
slicin’ a few flakes loose to blow
‘fore they slither to the ground

that knife wind cuts my cheekbones
where my beard don’t cover skin
my eyes are shutter’d about half mast
but my mouth is split with a grin

this March blizzard sure was a doozy
two days blowin’, with no sun
but I am sure proud of the first cow calvin’
after this arctic blast got all done!

  1. Hi Robert, were right along with you in your boots,my faith keeps me strong and right now just seeing how the calfs come along when we think something different just goes to show you the Lord looks out for us all!

  2. Nice poem, JB. I was thinking about you ranchers when I saw the storm in Rapid on the weather channel. It’s amazing how those little guys can spit out of their mothers’ wombs into wet, frigid weather and get up and start nursing instead of becoming instant calf-cubes!
