Storm comin’

Or so they say, tho’ my internet weather ain’t showing to much, but the wind is supposed to gust to 50 some mph tomorrow. Big cloud moving in from the southwest. Maybe we will get something.

Worked with the colt this morning teaching her to lead and go with her mamma. She is getting good. About time to hook up the team and take her along. I hook her to the belly band strap and then she can be beside her mamma. Hopefully she will just go along without too much fuss, tho’ I’d hate to have to drag her along for a real long trip just yet.

Pushed in a corner post at a gate and then put some cement in a tank that was going to leak. fixed some fence then went to Punkin Center to get a big culvert for the creek crossing the washed out. It’s only an 8 footer, but it should be wide enough for Purple, the little Suzuki. And for horses and cattle for sure. I just detest getting mud on my horses hooves. 😉

Dean came down this afternoon and worked on Pilgrim and sure looked like it did him some good. Then he checked Peaches, the little mare and she needs it also, but he had others to do so we will do it another day. After he left Cindy and I took the culvert out and unloaded it and I put it in. Hopefully we don’t get such a storm it washes it out where it’s fresh dirt. One more to fix and then I am done.

Until they all wash out again!

Re-model

We took Gabe to town yesterday and got new wall covering and tub surround for the bath tub, yesterday. So I am working on that, but still need to ride sometime today. Horses are getting fat!

Helped the neighbor fix a little fence this morning and got the trash hole burning.

It’s warming back up. Also I got a dip net and I want to go rescue the little bass trapped in the overflow of a local dam later today also.

Dirt work

Gabe is here visiting for a spell. He’s my oldest grandson. 5.

We saddled up Patches the POA pony and he rode her around in the corral a bit this morning, but wasn’t too keen on trotting so we quit, got the tractor and went up north and repaired a washed out creek crossing. Hopefully it won’t wash out again, too soon.

Now we’ve had lunch and he is napping. I may have to join him! 🙂

This and that

Fixed on some tanks. Used the weed whacker to cut some of the tall grass around here. Just trying to get things fixed up for the gathering that is going to take place here this weekend. Opened some gates so the heifers could go to the next pasture. I need to fix on some creek crossings and then see if I can mount the mower on the tractor and get it running. Got my hopper bait in so I need to go scatter some where I saw the tiny hoppers.

Road Trip

Left Sunday morning and hooked up with my nephew and his son in Sturgis and headed south, pulling the trailer with a horse in it for Chance. Went to Chadron and then over to Crawford, to check out the old cavalry post, Fort Robinson, where Crazyhorse came in and was killed. We then went south to Scott’s Bluff and then on to I 80. Dropped the horse off at Chances place where he’s working and looked at some cattle and pasture for a bit then headed to Cheyenne. Spent the night and did some business Monday morning then headed home. Went over to Guernsy and then north. I’d never taken that route before. Some real pretty country. Went north from Lusk to Newcastle and then over the hills to Deadwood and back to Sturgis. Seen lots of pretty country. Didn’t realize there were so many rocky outcroppings along that way. Snapped quite a few pictures along the way. Especially enjoyed the looks of the country at Chugwater.

Water can cause problems too….

Don’t get me wrong. I refuse to cuss the rain. Seen a lot more dust than mud in this country! But when you get big rains, you get running water, which is nice, but then I have creek crossings to fix. Oh well, it don’t happen that often. Got a couple fixed up and they sure weren’t too bad. Slipped and got a boot full of water as the overshoe wasn’t high enough. Got mud on a knee after slipping again. Also cow manure on a pants leg some where from fixing up a couple new corner posts. And all that before dinner! LOL

I need to take a horse in to get a Coggins on him and then visit a friend in town who is coming thru’ tomorrow. Poor lady got a new saddle last spring and then had a brain tumor afterwords when she got home from her trip out here. It’s been a long, tough haul for her, but she is recovering, tho’ she has trouble saying the words she wants to. Be good to get to see here instead of just talk on the phone!

Sometime tomorrow I need to slip up past Belle and pick up a couple horses I left with a nephew, also. Then the last branding of the season I have planned on Saturday, and a trip south on Sunday and should be coming back on Monday. I will try to remember the camera and get a few pictures.

Brandings on Tuesday and Wednesday

Mijo is getting better and better with the use he has got at these brandings.

Tuesday was a nordfork branding, today was a head and heel. Great weather and food and work.

Our branding

Chance came home and we got them done yesterday. Beautiful day. Small but efficient crew.
