Sumbuck!

I went out this morning and started tearing the old fence down in the corral. Cindy came along and helped for a bit. Then my dog started barking over at the woodpile, so we went to see what he had tree’d. When we got there, we saw a yellow streak run under the old truck with both my dogs after it and I thought it was probably a stray tom cat. I got there and looked under the truck and it was a fox.
So I kenneled the dogs and got to thinking about it and decided that probably I should shoot him, just in case he had rabies. I hollered at Cindy to stay there at the truck so he would stay, until I could get a gun and she said he had already left heading east. I let the dogs out, got in my little purple Suzuki and loaded my rifle and we headed out to see if we could find him. A hawk was dropping at something on the ground so I headed over there and saw a fox, so shot, but missed. As he ran off I shot again and got him. I loaded him into an old salt sack and called the vet. They said get him packaged and on ice and get him in there pdq!

So we quick cleaned up, loaded up and headed for town. We ran into construction on the way, but it’s funny, if you get up over that 100 line, you can make up lots of time!

We get to the vet and they screw around while I mutter about driving so fast at their insistence and then they screw around.

Now we wait and keep my dogs in, until we find out if the fox had rabies. He damn sure had the mange as he was missing lots of fur and looked like hell. This is what we get when we quite trapping and let mother Nature control the wildlife. steamed

I think both my dogs were vaccinated last spring when a vet was here to cut a stud, but I am not sure. If the fox shows rabies, my dogs have to be quarantined or shot, unless I can prove they are current on their shots. I suppose I’d have to take the shots, tho’ I only touched the fox after he was dead, but my dog might have got saliva on me and he had blood on his front legs. Maybe from a bite from the fox. He yipped once anyway.

So now we wait.

Dammit!

  1. I agree with threecollie! We had a fox here in the yard that killed all my chickens and they were laying in the horse pasture! I looked out the upstairs window of the house and saw it between the feed shed and the chicken house went a runnin downstairs yelling fox but by the time we all got outside it was headed to the woods! Nasty things!!

  2. We normally don’t get too excited about seeing a fox. Kind of nice to see one out in the pasture, after all the Mange and Parvo killed most of them and the coyotes off. But when they come in the yard, I guess it’s time to kill them. Not that many people live in these parts and they have lots of land to hunt on, so they need to keep their distance. My Dad hated them and wanted to shoot every one on sight.
