Helped a neighbor gather and work some cattle yesterday. We had to use some pens that maybe weren’t ideal but it sure went well. ‘Course, we had a good crew! 🙂

On a sad note. One of the young men who the boys went to school with was killed in an auto accident the other day. Funeral is tomorrow so we will all be going to it. I hate when we lose these young folks!

Some shots I snapped while we were getting ready and gathering the cattle last Friday for shipping.

The Democrats have a dirty little secret that they don’t want you to know. It is that their mantra of Bush’s “Tax Cuts for the Rich” is unabashedly false. The rich paid a higher percentage of the total tax bill under the Bush plan than under Clinton. In fact, the expiration of the Bush tax cut savages the low- and middle-class voters.

This case has been made and fact-checked with the ever-liberal Snopes.Com. The Tax Foundation used “tax table” rates between the Bush and Clinton tax plans to shows a huge difference for low income taxpayers, sometimes even a 100% tax increase when going backward to the Clinton “tax table” rates versus Bush.

Not so fast, says Snopes! Tax rates do not equal marginal rates, so they run some numbers that supposedly reflect that. Even using their own numbers in the table below, the results are damning.

Single tax payers in three typical low to middle income categories have the taxes increased 12% on average

Single Taxpayer making $30K – Pays 15% more in taxes when Bush tax cuts expire

Single Taxpayer making $50K – Pays 10% more in taxes when Bush tax cuts expire

Single Taxpayer making $75K – Pays 11% more in taxes when Bush tax cuts expire

But married taxpayers in typical low to middle income really get the shaft! Their taxes are increased 20.5% on average

Married Taxpayer making $60K – Pays 19.5% more in taxes when Bush tax cuts expire

Married Taxpayer making $75K – Pays 21.5% more in taxes when Bush tax cuts expire

Married Taxpayer making $125K – Pays 20.5% more in taxes when Bush tax cuts expire

Chance and Hope sold their calves today. Had a neighbor come to help, and he had a couple friends from back east visiting, so we had almost more riders than cattle to gather! Went well and we had them sorted and loaded in no time. Got to the salebarn way early and sat way too long. Market was a little better it sounded like and tho’ it was no barnburner, the kids seemed satisfied with how they weighed and what they brought.

Hope somebody wants painted calves down the road when I need to sell mine! 🙂 Sure was a nice day.

Knee is getting better fast. Thanks all for the kind words and thoughts. 🙂

My knee is sure sore. Hard to sleep last night. Kept trying to roll over and that was not a good idea. Called the vet today and as I thought, not much they can do, so I built me a leather wrap/brace. When it’s on it feels better. Going to go see if I can ride, later.

Not real pretty but effective!

I rode Mijo up west to move some cows and he wasn’t paying as much attention to my signals as I thought he should. Chance used to ride quite a few colts and when he had one acting like this, he would step off and “double” the colt, which means to send them off at about a 45 degree angle from you and then pull them back with the get down on the hackamore or snaffle. They soon learn to pay attention to the signals being sent down that piece of horsehair rope called a mecate. (mah ka teh)

Evidently when I did it, I must have used a just a wee bit more energy as Mijo jumped to the end of the mecate and whipped around and started running backwards. I don’t know why he seemed scared? Maybe because there was an old, fat man in boots, spurs and floppy chinks running at him while trying desperatly, to hang onto aforementioned mecate?

Bottom line, he went home alone, while I did also, only I had a slight limp in my left leg coming from pain in the left knee which I evidently had twisted in the fall when he jerked free from me. While walking home I came up with some sage words of wisdom and advice and observations.

When walking afoot, I notice I have lots and lots of grass.

Leather soled riding boots, spurs and leather chinks are great for riding, but not much help when walking afoot.

Old fat men who riding young semi-untrained horses should refrain from using training methods such as they have seen younger people do, unless they have emergency help along in case of emergency.

Walking afoot with leather soled riding boots, leather chinks and spurs is good exercise. But probably not as good of exercise as riding the young horses in aforementioned garb.

Walking back takes much longer than riding out.

I sure have a lot of grass this year.

Walking in leather soled riding boots, heavy leather chinks and way too heavy of spurs makes you sweat!

Cussing the young horse while walking back to the house just uses up precious oxygen that old, fat men need to power the body.

One advantage to walking is that as a pedestrian you don’t need to use gates in fences and can just climb over or thru a barbed wire fence. Thus you can follow line of sight rather than the trail the young horse took on his way home.

Bovine are much more intimidating when they beller and moo and show to be protective of their calves when you are afoot as compared to when you are horseback.

When you are riding you will see many sticks large enough to defend yourself from cows, bears or any other violent attack. When afoot, you will see none!

Did I mention I have a lot of grass this year?

As you walk your brain will devise many methods to subdue and train on the simple beast that put you in this position. But when you have at last grabbed a hold of said beast, you are too tired and decide that making him walk home was punishment enough.

Setting and trying to remember all that you thought of while walking home is much more difficult than when you first thought of it and words flowed like water in a river, in your mind.

Did I mention I sure have a lot of grass this year?

Walking with a sore knee is not fun and not to be recommended to anyone over the age of oh, I don’t know, say, 35 or 36 years of age?

After walking home in heavy leather chinks , heavy leather soled boots, way too heavy spurs, I have sweated and even tho’ I took a shower this morning, I suspect I will have to take another one tonight!

Riding the young horse the rest of the way home pains the sore knee and makes it advisable to go soak knee in hot water while drinking a medicinal drink with ice, water and preferably bourbon whisky.

After such hard exercise, I would think it is best for the old, fat man to relax and take a break for the rest of the day. While smiling at the thought of all the grass he has this year.

Casey, a neighbor, dropped in to visit after helping another neighbor ship his calves. Had a good visit and glad he stopped.

I worked on a new carving pattern for a saddle. Turned out good.

Rode out this afternoon and found some cows had escaped into the yearlings and the yearlings in with some cows, so put cows back. Tomorrow I will work on getting yearlings out.

Took Gramma out and looked at cows and calves this evening.

Now we are watching the series.

Rays just had back to back home runs. My Dad would have loved it!

I got this in an email this morning. Quite the story.

Subject: This is a true story. Lufkin, TX

This is an email we received from a friend who lives in Texas . I wanted
to make sure of its validity before I sent the story on, so I checked it out
on <; I have copied and
pasted the article from the Lufkin Newspaper below this email. There are
lots of political emails floating around out there, but we need to get this
one circulating. This is scary to think that someone who works for Obama
NOW would use the Federal Government to infringe on the rights of a
Just think what it could be like if he is elected!!

This is not a forward from me, this actually happened. I am hoping people
will send this on so that Americans can know the sort of fascist tactics
being used by the Obama Campaign:

On Wednesday the 1st of October I received a call on my cell while in the
car with my husband. It was a woman who identified herself as calling from
the Obama Campaign. The phone # she called from was 903-798-6020 which
lists as “Obama Volunteers of Texarkana” ( Texas ).

She asked if I was an Obama supporter to which I replied:
“No, I don’t support him, your guy is a socialist who voted four times in the State Senate to let little babies die in hospital closets; I think you should find something better to do with your time.” I hung up.

Thursday, October 2, I answered the front door to find the Secret Service. Immediately I thought of the call and was furious that apparently you are not allowed to call Obama a Socialist without the Secret Service coming to investigate. Instead, they asked me about the following comment, relayed by the Obama Volunteer of Texarkana who called me, unsolicited on my cell phone:
“I will never support Obama and he will wind up dead on a hospital floor.”
My husband laughed and told them “No, she called him a socialist, but she never said a word about him dying.” I gave them my actual quote. The woman asked insolently “Oh? Well why would she make that up?”

I replied that I supposed she wasn’t happy about what I said about her candidate and the Agent said “That’s right, you were rude!”

The last time I checked being rude wasn’t a crime in America. Luckily the big file they had gathered on me didn’t indicate mental instability or a past life of stalking/crime, however they did want to know how I felt about Obama. That was my limit. I told the Agent in no uncertain terms that my thoughts were not pertinent to their investigation, that this was America and the last time I checked I was allowed to think whatever I wanted without being questioned by the Secret Service. In fact, even if I had said what she claimed, that isn’t a threat. I told them (again) and my husband verified that the statement reported by Obama’s volunteer was a lie. I asked them if there was a tape of the call and they said no. I said, “So on the word of a ticked off Obama supporter you are on my porch with no other evidence and you want to question me about my THOUGHTS!?”

They informed me that there was no evidence she was an Obama supporter…someone calling from his campaign. I was not allowed to know the name of my accuser at which point they informed me that it wasn’t like I was in a court of law, YET, as if this was a good thing. I recognized this as a veiled threat. I told them I would happily go to court since I did nothing wrong and at least then my accuser would have to face me rather than sending the “thought” police to my house. They then said they were trying to do me a favor, that they came to me first before “embarrassing you by going to all your neighbors and family”, another threat?

I told them to be my guest and talk to whomever they wanted but they weren’t going to investigate my thoughts on my porch. They also informed me that it would be easier if the next time a supporter calls me I just say “Yeah sure count me in, or just hang up” apparently so she won’t get her undies in a bundle and give them more useless trips.

Yeah right.

I said “Look, someone calls me unsolicited on my cell phone to ask me to support their candidate and I can’t tell them why I don’t?”

I said I was sorry they made a wasted trip but if  they had a problem with some made up lie they needed to go talk to her about it because it wasn’t my fault they had to drive from Houston for nothing.

At one point I went inside and got a notepad to record their badge numbers and they refused to show me their badges. They had done the quick flip when they arrived. I asked for a card and the female Agent refused to give me one stating “You’re not going to get a card.” The male Agent gave me a card and told me I could contact Houston with any questions.

The fact that the volunteer lied, the fact that the Secret Service came to my house to question me about my thoughts and feelings and threaten to embarrass me to my neighbors and go to court if I didn’t cooperate is not really the tragedy here. Because that girl on the phone doesn’t have the pull to send the Secret Service to my home. Someone high in the ranks of a campaign working for a man who may be the next President of the United States of America felt comfortable bringing the force of the Federal Government to bear on a private citizen on nothing but the word of a partisan volunteer.

A Lufkin woman received a surprise visit from the Secret Service last week because of a “death threat” comment she reportedly made about Sen. Barack Obama to a campaign volunteer asking for her support of the presidential candidate.

Two federal agents arrived at Jessica Hughes’ home Thursday to ask her if she said, “I will never support Obama and he will wind up dead on a hospital floor.”

Jessica and Micah Hughes say two Secret Service agents showed up on their doorstep Thursday after a campaign volunteer for Sen. Barack Obama accused her of making a ‘death threat’ during a phone conversation a day earlier. Hughes said her words were deliberately twisted by a volunteer who was apparently unhappy Hughes was rude during a phone conversation the two had.
The Lufkin mother, a Republican, said she received a call on her cell phone Wednesday from a woman with the Obama Volunteers of Texarkana.
“She asked if I was an Obama supporter, to which I replied, ‘No, I don’t support him. Your guy is a socialist who voted four times in the state Senate to let little babies die in hospital closets; I think you should find something better to do with your time.’ (And then) I hung up.”

(Hughes is referring to a “born alive” Illinois bill that did not pass in the Illinois state Senate in 2005 and had previously been opposed by Obama because he said it undermined Roe v. Wade, according to, a non-partisan organization. A federal version of the bill, which Obama said he would have supported, passed by unanimous consent and was signed into
law by President George W. Bush in 2002.)

Obama Campaign Communications for Texas director Josh Taylor declined to comment Monday, refusing to answer any questions and referring the matter to the Secret Service, which he said is conducting an investigation. A message left with a Secret Service agent in Houston was not immediately returned.
Hughes said she was surprised to see two Secret Service agents at her door, and upset to learn that the conversation she had with the volunteerapparently had not been recorded.
“I find it hard to believe that (campaign volunteers) don’t tape these calls. They call people unsolicited and they aren’t monitoring the calls or recording them? I think that is absolutely ridiculous,” she said.
“I mean, how often must this happen – that someone is rude to a volunteer that they don’t want to talk to?”
Hughes said she wants to file a countercomplaint against the volunteer.
“She has made a charge that will follow me the rest of my life,” she said.
“I find that repugnant and violating – that some person got her undies in a bundle because she didn’t like what I had to say.”

Cold, wet and windy!

Fr Marchin’s parents are over from Poland, visiting, so they had a Polish dinner up to Faith to help raise money for their CCD classes. We went up and enjoyed the meal and getting to visit with people we don’t see real often.

I updated the horse and saddle page with new pictures. You might want to check that out and let me know what you think.

That is all. 🙂

“Obama calls increasing taxes and giving them to the needy a matter of “neighborliness.” His running mate, Joe Biden, calls it a matter of “patriotism.”

Yet when it comes to charitable giving, neither Obama (until recently) nor Biden feels sufficiently neighborly or patriotic to donate as much as the average American household: 2% of their adjusted gross income.

Liberal families earn about 6% more than conservative families, yet conservative households donate about 30% more to charity than do liberal households. And conservatives give more than just to their own churches and other houses of worship. Conservatives, especially religious conservatives, give far more money and donate more of their time to nonreligious charitable causes than do liberals — especially secular liberals.

In 2007, President Bush and his wife had an adjusted gross income of $923,807. They paid $221,635 in taxes and donated $165,660 — 18% of their income — to charity. Vice President and Mrs. Cheney, in 2007, had a taxable income of $3.04 million. They paid $602,651 in taxes and donated $166,547 — 5.5% of their income — to charity.

Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, earned between $200,000 and $300,000 a year between 2000 and 2004, and they donated less than 1% to charity. When their income soared to $4.2 million in 2007, their charitable contributions went up to 5%.

Joe and Jill Biden, by contrast, made $319,853 and gave $995 to charity in 2007, or 0.3% of their income. And that was during the year Biden was running for president. Over the past 10 years, the Bidens earned $2,450,042 and gave $3,690 to charity — or 0.1% of their income.

So let’s sum up. The “compassionate” liberals — at least based on charitable giving — show less compassion than “hardhearted” conservatives. The rich pay more in income taxes than people think. Voters, clueless about the facts, want the rich to pay still more.”
